Online Safety at Greave Primary School

At Greave Primary School, we are committed to helping our children stay safe, happy and responsible when using technology both in school and at home. The internet provides many exciting opportunities for learning, communication and creativity, but it is important that children understand how to use it safely and appropriately.

Online Safety is taught throughout the curriculum and is regularly reinforced through Computing lessons, PSHE, assemblies and class discussions. At Greave Primary School, we use the Project Evolve scheme of work to support the teaching of Online Safety. Project Evolve is based on the UK Council for Internet Safety framework “Education for a Connected World” and helps children develop the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.

Each class teacher delivers a dedicated Project Evolve Online Safety lesson every half term, ensuring that Online Safety education is regularly revisited and remains relevant to children’s experiences both in and out of school.

Through Project Evolve, pupils learn about:

  • Self-image and identity
  • Online relationships
  • Online reputation
  • Online bullying
  • Managing online information
  • Health, wellbeing and lifestyle
  • Privacy and security
  • Copyright and ownership

In addition to our curriculum teaching, we also welcome annual visits from Stockport Justice, who deliver workshops for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. These sessions focus on the importance of not sharing personal information online and provide children with practical advice about how to stay safe when using the internet and digital devices.

Mr Goodlad, our Computing Lead, also delivers assemblies throughout the year linked to Online Safety themes, helping to reinforce key messages across the whole school community.

Every February, we take part in Safer Internet Day as a whole school. This national event provides an opportunity for children to explore current online safety issues, celebrate positive use of technology and discuss how to stay safe online.

We encourage children to become respectful digital citizens who know how to protect themselves and others online.

Supporting Children at Home

Technology is an important part of everyday life and many children use devices for gaming, social media, messaging and watching videos. We recognise that keeping up with new apps, games and online trends can sometimes feel challenging for parents and carers.

  • Guidance on popular apps, games and social media platforms

Key Online Safety Messages

We encourage all children to remember:

  • Never share personal information online
  • Speak to a trusted adult if something online worries or upsets them
  • Use kind and respectful language online
  • Keep passwords private and secure
  • Think carefully before sharing photos, videos or comments

Advice for Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children develop safe online habits. We recommend:

  • Talking regularly with your child about their online activity
  • Keeping devices in shared family spaces where possible
  • Using age-appropriate parental controls
  • Checking age ratings for games, apps and social media
  • Encouraging a healthy balance between screen time and other activities
